The legend is about the half-human nymph Galatea who falls in love with a simple shepherd named Aci. Cyclops Polifemo, who is secretly in love with Galatea, kills Aci with a giant rock. Sorrowful Galatea casts a spell over Aci, who turns into a river. Polifemo’s part is particularly remarkable because it challenges the singer to exploit whole of his vocal extension and virtuosity.
