La riscoperta del trionfo antico nelle arti

“Non che Roma di carro così bello / rallegrasse Affricano, o vero Augusto; / ma quel del Sol sarìa pover con ello”: this is how Dante evokes, in the XXIX canto of Purgatorio, an ancient triumph to introduce his own encounter with Beatrice. These verses and the description that follows are a tangible sign that the memory of this celebration, so characteristic of republican and imperial Rome, was not only entrusted to the triumphal arches of which the Mediterranean area is scattered, but also to the pages from which Dante draws it, followed then brilliantly by Boccaccio and Petrarch. The diffusion of triumph theme in art is intertwined with, and partly depends on, this literary fortune. Linking together images and texts, the conference “narrates” the masterpieces of the Renaissance that emerged from the charm of the Roman triumph, and then shows how, unpredictably, it was the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg who used it in the most systematic way for his propaganda, becoming the patron of some of the most extraordinary triumphs in art.
