Our History
Grandezze & Meraviglie is the longest-running Early Music Festival in Emilia-Romagna. It is one of the most ambitious and innovative festivals in all of Italy, as well as one of the many important exhibitions based on the early music repertoire (ranging from the Middle Ages to the early 19th Century), with accurate instruments and live performances. The festival was created for the celebration of “Modena Capitale”, the anniversary of the relocation of the Estense court from Ferrara to Modena (1598-1998).
We were given the 28th Franco Abbiati prize for “best initiative of 2008” with the following caption: “al Festival Musicale Estense Grandezze e Meraviglie per la capacità di coniugare la divulgazione dei repertori antichi e barocchi europei con la valorizzazione del patrimonio musicale estense (in particolare quello delle Raccolte Ducali) in una programmazione oramai decennale affidata a complessi di ricercata autorevolezza, inquadrata in un contesto interdisciplinare e diffusa capillarmente nel territorio”.
Over the past 25 years, we have organised more than 400 concerts, as well as multiple concert-lessons and conferences. As of today, around 30 CDs and DVDs display the Grandezze & Meraviglie logo, thanks to our participation in various musical productions.
By recognising the project’s continuity, the Comune di Modena (Municipality of Modena) has awarded Grandezze & Meraviglie the title of “Festival Musicale Estense”, which has been aided over the years by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Vignola, Fondazione cassa di Risparmio di Mirandola, BPER Banca and by Comune di Modena, Comune di Sassuolo, Comune di Vignola, Comune di Mirandola, Comune di Carpi.
Grandezze & Meraviglie has contributed for the past 25 years to an extraordinary world which includes concerts, formative, educational and cultural activities, masterclasses, meetings with schools, concert-lessons and the cycle of university lectures “I Linguaggi delle Arti”.
