These verses and the description that follows are a tangible sign that the memory of this celebration, so characteristic of republican and imperial Rome, was not only entrusted to the triumphal arches of which the Mediterranean area is scattered, but also to the pages from which Dante draws it, followed then brilliantly by Boccaccio and Petrarch. The diffusion of triumph theme in art is intertwined with, and partly depends on, this literary fortune.
