L\u2019uomo pu\u00f2 intervenire a modificarla, anche sensibilmente, ma poi la natura ritorna trionfante e cancella, riassorbendo nella sua esuberante fecondit\u00e0, le costruzioni dell\u2019uomo. Cos\u00ec \u00e8 raccontato anche in cicli pittorici come Il corso dell\u2019impero di Thomas Cole, uno dei maggiori esponenti della Hudson River School, o nelle riflessioni filosofiche degli scrittori americani del Trascendentalismo, da Emerson a Thoreau. In numerosi film e romanzi distopici recenti, come The Road di Cormic McCarthy, la natura, sconvolta dalla tracotanza dell\u2019uomo, trionfa ugualmente, ma diventa anche un luogo inospitale, che sembra escludere la possibilit\u00e0 di sopravvivenza dell\u2019uomo.
