A virtuoso example of baroque dialogue, Michelangelo Falvetti’s The Great Flood transforms the Old Testament narrative into a refined allegorical representation. In Vincenzo Giattini’s text, the action does not only involve Noah, his wife Rad and the voice of God, but also calls into question symbolic figures and the forces of nature themselves.. Divine Justice summons the four Elements—Water, Air, Fire, and Earth—making them the executors of punishment against corrupt humanity. The score conveys the fury of the cataclysm with theatrical vigor, up to the appearance of Death who celebrates his victory to the pressing rhythm of a tarantella. Finally, it will be the sign of the rainbow that will bring back harmony, symbolizing the reconciliation between the Creator and the cosmos. The production, conceived for the Festivalfilosofia, features the Crescere in Musica Baroque Ensemble directed by Sergio Gasparella, with baroque direction and gesture by Alberto Allegrezza and choreography by Bernd Niedecken.
