DIDO AND AENEAS
di H. Purcell
Ensemble Barocco Vecchi-Tonelli
As part of Modena Città del Belcanto
Among the innovations in the program of the Modena Belcanto 2019 season stand out the operatic productions among the qualities we highlight Dido and Aeneas, the English composer Henry Purcell, which goes on stage thanks to the collaboration of the Teatro Comunale, the master of ancient music of the ISSM Vecchi – Tonelli and Grandezze e Meraviglie. Dido and Aeneas is an opera in a prologue and three acts, written by Henry Purcell on a libretto by Nahum Tate (taken from the Aeneid) and a masterpiece by the English musician. The date of the composition and the first representation of the work are uncertain. The work is about Enea’s stay in Carthage, host of Queen Didone (Dido), whom he will fall in love with. Forced to abandon it for his higher purposes, the Trojan hero will leave to follow the destiny that will lead him to found Rome, provoking the desperation and suicide of Dido, which is accompanied by one of the most touching arias in the history of music “When I am lying on the earth ”.
