MODENA 1494-1495
Il trionfo di San Geminiano

with Giorgio Montecchi (ASLA)

The theme is a unique one in the history of Modena and the Saint: a true “booklet” of a sacred show of the late fifteenth century. The life of the patron saint of the city was represented on 30 April 1494 with the recitation animated by songs and dances on two raised stages, as documented by the chronicler Jacopino de’ Lancellotti, in the crowd and in front of the facade of the cathedral. The following year the entire script was published in print, and it has reached us in an incunabulum of the Estense Library of Modena: Giovanni Maria Parente, Vita di san Geminiano,1494. Born in Cognento in 312 and died in Modena in 397, Geminiano was remembered for the power he had over demons, and the fame of his holiness reached the court of Constantinople. He traveled to the East to care for the emperor’s daughter, and had important roles in the Church. The translation and reconnaissance of the body of St Geminianus in 1106 took place in the presence of Pope Paschal II, Matilda of Canossa and all the citizens of Modena.
