ROYAL MUSIC: PURCELL & HANDEL
Suite da “The Fairy Queen” & Water Music
Paolo Faldi, director
In the sumptuous concert the Anglo-Italian style and the French overture meet in a syncretic manner, in a framework of regal majesty. Purcell, near the end of his career, with The Fair Queen (London 1692), here proposed in a suite, composed some of his most beautiful theatrical music, exhibiting the contrapuntal skill and assimilation of Italian influences. Handel composed Water Music at the request of King George I by executing it on the Thames, with a wealth of instruments that, in addition to the strings and the continuous, requires at least one flute, two oboes, a bassoon, two horns, two trumpets, strings and continuous.
